Centering prayer
Thomas Keating · Christian Contemplative
About 20 minutes
Choose a sacred word as a symbol of your intention to consent to God's presence and action within.
Sit comfortably with eyes closed. Settle briefly, and silently introduce your sacred word.
When you become aware of thoughts, return gently to the sacred word.
The sacred word is not meant to be repeated continuously. It is a gesture of consent, returned to whenever you notice you have become engaged with thoughts.
Do not resist thoughts. Do not retain thoughts. Simply return to the sacred word.
This is not about thinking about God, but about being with God. Beyond words, beyond images, beyond concepts.
The silence is not emptiness—it is fullness.
Remain in this openness for twenty minutes.
